The process of psychodynamic psychotherapy explores how we have developed protective defensive strategies to ward off emotional pain. The more profound the pain, the stronger the defense, which prevents us seeing what is difficult for us to encounter. These protective strategies can end up creating behavioral patterns that may become self defeating to the individual and destructive to our relationships, at a level that is outside our awareness.

We establish protective behaviors to defend against seeing what is difficult for us to encounter within ourselves. The more we defend against seeing our self, the more we act out these protective behaviors that are no longer working for us. It is only when we start to see ourselves that we can transform the destructive parts into something that is healthier. It is at this stage that we begin to accept ourselves and others.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy can transform destructive behaviors into ways of relating that builds connection, so the individual does not need to invest energy keeping down emotional pain. So individuals can be free to enjoy life, rather then defending against what is painful.
