Individual therapy and Psychotherapy
Many who undertake individual therapy feel that their problems are caused by external events that are outside their control, so they feel helpless to change them. Some feel that if they move away, find a new partner or leave their job that their problems will also go away. The truth is that you take your ‘self’ where ever you go; so the problems often re-create themselves, until you work on them.
According to Masterson (1988) many individuals who have an impaired self end up blaming “life” rather than own their problems, so they avoid them, becoming passive to face challenges, denying the mess they have created in their lives. Many are afraid of looking inside to find the real self. Instead the false self responds by defending against painful feelings. When the real self hides, the self remains impaired and does not grow, but continues to avoid painful feelings, with self-destructive behaviors which enables them to escape reality, rather then face it .
Individual therapy and counselling assists many to see how they re-enact the same problematic dynamics in their life and how to overcome them.
Individual Therapy and psychotherapy promotes the real self to develop, so it can handle emotions and can overcome self-defeating behaviors. Individual Therapy achieves the purpose of allowing individuals to activate their real self, develop self-esteem, be able to manage painful feelings, enable individuals to cope on their own, promote stability and continuity in the self. Individual therapy allows individuals to see themselves and others more clearly, while feel secure in the ‘self and their relationships (Masterson, 1988).
